Practice
Laura Scalco is an ARB-qualified architect based in Europe, working at the intersection of spatial design, editorial, and the built environment through her practice, Studio Scalco.
Her work spans private residential projects, cultural and community-led developments, and strategic design research. She has contributed to award-winning retrofit and regeneration schemes, working with clients ranging from individual homeowners to non-profit organisations and large-scale developers. Alongside this, she has led and synthesised engagement processes involving hundreds of stakeholders, translating complex social and spatial dynamics into clear design direction.
Trained across the United Kingdom, France, Portugal, and Spain, Laura brings a cross-cultural perspective to her work, combining design rigour with a strong sensitivity to context, narrative, and use. She is registered with the Architects Registration Board.
Running parallel to her architectural practice is an editorial and communications strand, through which she works with publications, studios, and cultural platforms to shape narratives around design. This dual approach informs a way of working that moves fluidly between making, writing, and strategy — allowing projects to be understood not only as spaces, but as cultural and social propositions.
Approach
Laura’s work begins before design, through a close reading of people, patterns of use, and the often unspoken constraints that shape a space.
She defines clear direction early on, clarifying brief, aligning priorities, and establishing spatial strategies that can be carried through to delivery. Across private, community, and developer-led projects, she works between concept and execution, ensuring continuity from initial idea to built outcome.
Her process moves between analysis and intuition, using research, drawing, and dialogue to test and refine decisions. Alongside this, her editorial background brings a particular strength in communication — articulating ideas clearly, building trust, and reducing friction throughout the process.
